A New Vision For The ‘Gateway to Gulfton’
A NEW VISION FOR THE ‘GATEWAY TO GULFTON’
A New Vision for Hillcroft Avenue is a project prioritized by the Mayor’s Safer Streets initiative which was announced in April 2019 in the Gulfton neighborhood, and has been moved forward by Connect Community and Together for Safer Roads. This project is focused on improving road safety within the Gulfton neighborhood, with a focus on Hillcroft, Highstar and Westward streets.
The Gateway to Gulfton is intended to be a physical space that both welcomes those entering the community and is a visual queue to drivers that Hillcroft Avenue is the Main Street for the community, not just a through street to be sped down. High school road safety interns were hired in the summer of 2019 to work with project engineers to learn new skills and help inform the design through their lived experience and the cultural identities of the neighborhood.
Final design will be completed by the City of Houston’s Public Works Dept in December 2020 with full construction completed by Summer 2021.
